“I have a story. I will tell it while I can.” is a video campaign that helped all those who wanted to make their voices heard to take action in defense of freedom of expression. The government has been systematically attacking the right to expression and freedom of speech for years. This has been reinforced recently by the growing number of cases brought by the Hungarian Helsinki Committee on the subject, the entry into force of the Sovereignty Protection Act in 2024, and the criminalisation of defamation of expression on posters, tarmac, etc. since 2022. The continuous shrinking of the space for expression is seriously eroding human rights and destroying the rule of law, hindering citizens' democratic aspirations and critical expression of their views against the system.
The Hungarian Helsinki Committee has several clients who have been fired from their jobs for expressing critical opinions - some of them in very high-profile cases. Their campaign was a call to action for those who wanted to take action to defend our rights. The campaign included a series of videos, influencer content and an online toolkit that not only depicted outrageous, sometimes absurd, true stories and social issues, but also offered concrete knowledge and tools for action. The campaign placed particular emphasis on reaching ordinary workers and reinforcing that everyone has the right to express their opinion, and that those who experience abuse are not alone.
