The most severe series of terrorist attacks in modern-day Hungary occurred between July 21, 2008, and August 3, 2009, when far-right perpetrators targeted families of Roma origin—killing several individuals—across nine localities in five counties.
The trauma of these attacks remains unprocessed to this day, and no adequate public remembrance or commemorative policy has been established in relation to the events. Furthermore, the stories and achievements of everyday Roma individuals continue to receive insufficient attention; in fact, they are often overlooked even by Roma families and communities themselves. These issues affect not only Roma people but Hungarian society as a whole. The negative patterns they reflect can only be broken through positive, community-driven initiatives.
In response, the 1Hungary Association organized community-based remembrance programs in the capital and six rural towns. These initiatives contributed to the processing of the trauma caused by the series of murders committed against Roma individuals, helped strengthen Roma identity and self-image, and aimed to influence the attitudes of the majority population.
