In Debrecen and its surroundings, the violent industrial relocation programme of recent years has provoked lively public protests, resulting in the establishment of numerous battery plants and their service companies in and around the county capital as priority national economic investments. These plants pose a number of environmental risks, including air and sewage pollution, and huge water and energy demands. Industrial expansion is also taking place in Hajdúböszörmény, where a few tens of hectares of the Csorda pasture, a preserved loess wasteland belonging to the heritage of the town's past, is under threat.
The Green Circle is launching a campaign to inform the public and preserve the natural values of the designated site. In addition to targeting local residents, the programmes will place particular emphasis on involving young people and farmers. Public support will also be used to ensure that the site, which is of great natural and landscape value, is protected as a site of local interest and that local people become more open, sensitive and active in environmental matters in the future.
