HASS - ACTIVATION OF YOUNG PEOPLE'S CIVIC COMPETENCES AT INSTITUTIONAL LEVEL, THROUGH INFORMAL-NONFORMAL METHODS

Association of Hungarian Foundation, Communal and Private Educational Institutions
Budapest

In Hungary, there is a modest culture of community building and activation methodologies, whether in institutions, workplaces, civic groups or the growing generation. The aim of the project is to encourage young people from 10 rural student communities to engage in a socially responsible action, campaign or project. Depending on the context of the local teams, the immediate target group is about 1500 young people aged 15-18. The success of the project depends on the activity of the direct target groups and thus on their appropriate facilitation and mentoring. The activities leading to this include developing the facilitation skills of 10 teachers; mentoring and monitoring the local youth work of the trained facilitators; motivating the active youth groups that are organised as a result of the facilitation, by launching an incentive competition for them; and presenting the results widely, thus multiplying further groups. All activities will take place in an informal-non-formal educational setting. The work requires a democratic atmosphere, respect for each other, equal access, freedom of opinion and expression and acceptance of diversity. While respecting cooperation, diversity and community rules, young people learn tools to help them live democratically. The sustainability of the project will be reinforced by the introduction of an Active Community Project of the Year Award.
