CERV-F3-2024-1087
Jarokelo Public Benefit Association
Budapest

The School Street Project aims to reduce excessive car traffic around the Batthány Lajos Primary School in Buda to improve air quality, create a safer environment, and promote sustainable modes of transportation. The program contributes to the development of a livable, child-friendly urban environment where children can travel independently and safely, while also strengthening community engagement.
The project directly affects over 300 students, their parents, approximately 50 educators, and 150 local residents in the vicinity of the targeted school, kindergarten, and daycare center. Indirectly, it involves decision-makers, local businesses, and 3,600 households in the neighbourhood.
Key activities include interactive workshops for children, parents, and staff focusing on the benefits of sustainable transportation and the school street concept. Traffic management plans are developed through community and professional consultations. Air quality and noise level measurements provide objective evidence of the project’s impact. Informational brochures, email campaigns, and social media content enhance public awareness. Celebratory events marking the operation of the school street, such as prize draws, encourage active participation. Bicycle training sessions improve the mobility skills of students and their parents.
The experiences gained in reducing air pollution and engaging the community can serve as a model for other schools in Budapest. In the long term, the project contributes to promoting sustainable urban planning and creating child-friendly cities.
