In Hungary today, people with disabilities face significant barriers to independent living, largely due to their limited access to public transportation. To address this issue, the Pécs Disability Platform has launched an initiative aimed at making public transport in Pécs more accessible.
While most buses in Pécs are low-floor, the reality is that people with disabilities still face daily disadvantages. They often struggle to obtain necessary information, as the public address system may not function properly or is hard to hear. Monitors often display advertisements, making it harder for people with disabilities to navigate. Additionally, bus drivers and passengers frequently lack the knowledge and sensitivity to assist people with disabilities who wish to travel.
Since its establishment in 2022, the platform has started a campaign to raise awareness among fellow passengers, bus drivers, and policymakers about the rights of people with disabilities. The campaign highlights the everyday difficulties faced by people with disabilities while using public transportation.
The long-term goal is twofold: not only to change public attitudes, but also to ensure that transportation companies and local decision-makers consistently prioritize the rights of people with disabilities in their decision-making processes.
