Municipal Housing Minimum campaign

The Housing Coalition is an informal association of organizations dealing with housing in Hungary. Its objective is to make proposals for the municipal elections in 2024 that can remedy the symptoms of the housing crisis and provide methods for the fight against housing poverty at the local level. This proposal package is the Municipal Housing Minimum, which is available on the website www.lakhatasiminimum.hu.
The aim of the campaign was that the candidates running in local government elections commit to as many of the listed housing policy measures as possible and, if elected, to implement the measures. Voters could also take an active role in the campaign: the more people know about these proposals, the more they can request their implementation from the local governments.
The campaign consisted of:
- creating attention-grabbing videos from individual chapters of the Housing Minimum;
- creating educational social media content;
- if required, presentation of the Housing Minimum on public forums;
- after the local government election, maintaining contact with the winning candidates, process support for the introduction of certain methods.
The interest from municipal candidates was much lower than expected, but the videos produced as part of the campaign produced higher than expected reach. At the same time, awareness of the local response to the housing crisis and possible ways of dealing with it has increased, reaching many more people than would have been the case without the campaign. Housing was also highlighted in the government's December 2024 economic plans - and in this respect it is important that the policy paper also offers options for local authorities to address the issue.
